Each day gets a little bit easier Each day I’m a little more whole I know I haven’t reached the end of it, But my heartstrings are getting real swole. 🧡sg No cemetery for me this morning! Instead I have been doing homework, eating waffles, taking baths, playing piano in the dark, taking walks, and being quiet. And talking to Mommy for 3 hours. She loves me so. It’s still hard. Ok y'all know kitsune(fox) is my favorite folklore character and this year for @pianopushplay I get to make kitsune my focal point! I love this photograph because to me it's more than what it looks like! After a long year of isolation due to the pandemic and all the loss we have suffered in the world this picture is a light at the end of a tunnel! This picture tells me that it has come to an end! When I saw this piano it put a huge smile on my face because to me this piano symbolizes the little joys of life. It symbolizes never again taking for granted the beautiful sceneries that in our busyness we used to just drive by on the daily. This picture symbolizes slowing down and remembering what's important. This picture symbolizes Unity in our city! People coming together to collab creatively through music and art ! The Soul Restoration Project-Day 12 This coming Thursday marks the beginning of Phase 2 of the Soul Restoration Project, which among other things means the arrival of this wonderful piece of art into the North Park Blocks. If y𠆚ll don’t know about @thedailydaren - you should - this is their second piano they’ve created with us - and we are viewing it - and the special event it is the anchor for as our kickoff for summer 2021 ✨✨✨ ✨✨✨✨ A month ago - our dear @darrelljazz asked if we could find/create a piano to bring to the @vanportmosaic where he will be performing June 24th- June 27th - leading rituals of welcome and gratitude every morning and evening with this piano and a whole host of artists. @vineandthistle and I just completed this dream project for @pianopushplay! We spent the month of July working on it in our studio @nurtureartistcollective. @momojena shared her poetry skills and came up with the beautiful words. Alicia and I designed the illustrations together using @procreate and took turns drawing each part to collaborate. To get the art on the piano, we used a small projector, chalk and then painted. The piano was placed out in the world at @topazfarm on Sauvie Island and will be there all month to enjoy! Check out my stories to see all of the pianos painted by other talented artists in Portland! We want to live in a world where we can fully express our truth, be heard, and also deeply listen to one another. Pardon the frizzy hair, it’s humid today. The pianos are back out and I’m so excited about it! About 4 years ago, I came to Portland for the first time and played a piano out on waterfront park. It is still one of my favourite experiences I’ve had within the city and it’s the one that convinced me that I’m moving here someday. Now I’m here in a beautiful apartment with my lovely boyfriend, our adorable dog, and our cute little cat (not pictured). It was amazing to be able to play a piano again. Now I just need to save up enough money to live in a place where I can have a real piano! #pleaseplayme.

Our Friday night concert series is commencing tomorrow night - this is where we provide you 👊🏼 with a lovely evening of piano music al fresco at the @portlandartmuseum - we will be playing on the baller- our mirror ball piano created by @jenfullerstudios and tomorrow at 6:30pm we will kickoff with students from the SWEP program- The Summer Work Experience Program is the product of partnerships between the Oregon Commission for the Blind and dozens of local businesses, nonprofits, and educational organizations in an effort to empower young adults experiencing vision loss to achieve their goals. “Piano.Push.Play” is a neat, local outreach project where pianos are rescued, painted, and put around Portland on streets and in parks for people to play. Good life and bad life. With my album #templemoondesire coming out, there is a dichotomy in my emotional state. One that after more than 5 years working on this album says, I am so grateful for the time and energy of everyone I worked with to make this group of songs become a reality, but also a fear that maybe I have somehow lost some part of myself in the process of being so devoted to creating a record that only reflects me through the stories of others. I was thinking a lot about compassion while writing these songs, but within the Yin of compassion also lays the Yang of the urge for revenge. I set up this photo shoot with @corinnascottphotography because I wanted to illustrate the polarity of real life in music. The love and hate, joy and sadness. War and peace. ⛩🌙🖤 I am so thankful to have been lucky enough to have worked with the #pdx producer @dcpollock as we constructed and deconstructed my ideas for songs. And then, as if a spirit was guiding us towards all the right people - we had the amazing opportunity to work with @lilysheers on vocal compositions and @honeywinemeade on horn composition. It felt so right, like this guiding force was bringing us all together, in a new age of #portland friendship and musical collaboration.🌳.

I wrote this song, after about a full 3 years of seeing black men and black children in the United States shot down by police. Everyday was like another horrible tragedy. I felt so helpless. I wanted to write a song that spoke about these feelings and so for the next year @dcpollock and I got really serious in the Fortress Galaxy studios, we began by getting rid of most of the piano in this song, then we asked for some help writing the female vocal parts from the genius songwriter @lilysheers - and thankfully she agreed. She really added a mesmerizing voice to the story of my song. Not to even mention the amazing horns that Anthony Meade @honeywinemeade laid down so cosmically! After that I brought the song to @novostiofficial and him and I spent about another full year with actors and other film-artists making a music video : short film whose point is to really make the audience THINK. I really hope this music video makes your stomach churn the way it does to me. @cymaspace is a really rad performance space here in Portland, dedicated to making music, dance, radio, film and art more accessible to the deaf and hard of hearing. I have worked on a few projects at @cymaspace and it’s always been a blast and an inspiration. This is another one of the @pianopushplay 🎹 pianos that will be featured today at @tedxportland - this beauty was a joy to play imagineered by @mylesdebastion 💡who has some pretty awesome work out there involving light and touch and motion, at @portlandchildrensmuseum and also @omsi - I think as well. This was one of the first pianos Jov Luke @novostiofficial 🎥🎬 filmed Ian Christensen🎷 and I jamming at. What an awesome way to start the warm season! I am so grateful that accessible inclusive places like @cymaspace exist. 👂🏼💙🙌🏼❤️.

The first reason I like ADX Portland is because they’ve created a safe place to work on really cool stuff. It’s like a hive of creative folks who are all happy to share their knowledge with each other. Do songs have the ability to change the world? That's a question I have been asking myself a lot over the last few years, while working on Temple Moon Desire. I'm still not sure. I really don't know, but one thing that has stood out to me during the making of this record is that, I've had so much help from musicians, artists, film-makers, songwriters, producers, photographers and so many others. So, even if my songs are not changing the issues of the world today, at least I am making friends and partners with fellow artists and workers. The community that came together in the building of Temple Moon Desire, has become a coalition of inspirational artists and thinkers, and very well, might just be more important than the songs themselves. I've met and learned from so many different people that I am eager to continue learning from and working with. I can't ask for much more than what my community and friends have given me, the gift of not going at it alone. I have always felt like songwriting - and creating albums, records of songs, are like sharing the most intimate details of the songwriter’s or band’s lives. The lyrics can say things that are super personal, or not, but the music that accompanies the lyrics can be even more telling. whether the song is dark, sad, angry, happy, uplifting, joyful, awkward, ...anything, but the music always adds this extra layer that says whether the lyrics are saying what they mean or not. When we started working seriously on Temple Moon Desire, Aaron Swartz #aaronswartz had just committed suicide. He was a genius, an activist and an incredible intellectual. I wanted to write a song about how that made me feel. That song made it on the record, the song was titled, Back to BC. As the record progressed, I realized there were many more people I wanted to write songs for and about, people that had come into my life and out of my life. That is why I am so excited to share Temple Moon Desire with you all. Because I tried so hard to tell my story of what it has been like to watch the world and my world change all around me. One of the most important reasons for me to release the songs on my record #templemoondesire was to elucidate my feelings about the United Stare’s roll in the world. I did this by working with respected women and journalists from Afghanistan and asking people in my community what they thought about war. I recorded with as many people as I could find. We all talked about the songs and about what they made us feel. Who knows what’s going to happen when you do one little thing.... and just keep doing it. I didn’t even know when I started @pianopushplay - I simply want to see something continue to happen and so I asked my friend @jz_thegirl to make me a sign to help it grow 😉 I’ve brought a piano to this street corner for 7 years now- and true magic and connection has been created on these pianos that can’t ever be described or explained- especially in this little word box- I’m just so glad that the lessons for myself as human/musician/pianist continue.

6 years ago I did this crazy thing with my friends- push a piano to a street corner in downtown Portland and play music for those walking by - now here I am years later and have the support of incredible people, artists and institutions in my city that help me create an ever-changing, ever-growing community of people who love the magic that happens when you come across a big beautiful piano outside in unexpected places. I would love to see you at the @portlandartmuseum in a few short weeks to welcome this seasons crop of painted pianos to the streets and parks of Portland - oh- and I’ll be singing a song too! 🎨🎹🎉✨.
