Monika Lea Jones @artofmonikalea is our newest Pianos About Town Artist. Come see her paint at Foothills through December 23. She is located indoors near the Macys entrance.Monika's art focuses on the natural world of landscapes, plants, and animals. For her, this also includes outer space. Her paintings accurately depict stelar space for adventurers to explore. For her Butterfly Nebula mural, Monika chose this nebula for her mural because the exploding clouds of gas create wings that are recognizable. Also, this nebula was used by NASA, for its "A Universe of Sound" project where an image was translated into music—the higher the light, the higher the pitch, and vice versa. Cheng Li played a painted piano on her first visit to Fort Collins. “I spotted a painted piano and sat down to play,” said Li. “In that moment, playing on the beautiful piano under the dappled shade of an aged tree, I felt at home in this new place. Cheng Li @azaleas.art is our newest Pianos About Town artist. Visit her at Foothills @shopfoothills near Macys through 11/30.Cheng’s design, the Whimsical Musical Machine, is a reimagination of the complex machinery inside an upright piano. Instead of strings and hammers, this piano is powered by gears and pipes. The pipes originate from the pedal to form a network that wraps around the entire piano. The interconnected pipes invite the viewers to take a look around all sides of the piano to follow their path. These pipes are striped with different color combinations to simulate transportation of the colors through them. In the front of the piano, a rainbow bursts out of the two ends of these pipes. The playful creatures go about their day in this world—some enjoy the day by sliding down on the rainbow, others sing—all live happily inside the piano. #focoart #focomusic #paintedpiano.

Introducing our next piano artist, Cheng Li! @azaleas.art Cheng was born in Japan and grew up exploring the lush hills of Japan and the swampy grasslands of Houston. She now lives in Longmont, and she calls Colorado and the mountains her home. She is a software engineer with a passion for art. She loves to challenge herself by learning various media for her work. She is excited for the opportunity to share her art and connect with people through this public art project. Cheng is an avid hiker, and when not outdoors, she likes to spend her time playing the piano and solving crosswords.Cheng learned to play piano as a young child. "I remember riding my little sky-blue bike down to my piano teacher’s house for my weekly piano lessons,” said Cheng. “From then on, music has been the one constant in my life. When I moved overseas from Japan to the U.S. and lost my spoken language, music was the one language that stayed with me. Music was there for me when I felt lost without my voice.” Cheng’s title for her design is “Whimsical Music Machine,” a concept that reimagines the internal mechanisms of a piano. Instead of strings and hammers, this piano is powered by gears and pipes. We are SO excited to share about the latest piano being painted by Creative Kids Collective at @shopfoothills. Emma, a young art student, inspired her fellow art students to apply to paint a piano as a group with help from their art teach, Christy Alden. The students attended one of our workshops to gather information and ask questions about the painting process and then spent all weekend eating pizza together while they brainstormed their concept and wrote their letter of intention. Here’s an excerpt from their application. “We are a close-knit, diverse group of young, emerging artists from the Fort Collins-Timnath area who participate in weekly art classes at Christy Alden’s art studio in her home. We range in age from 6-18. Most of us have attended the art classes together for 10 years or more and we are like a family! We share ideas and encourage one another and learn about each other’s families, friends, cultures and interests. We have never done a project like the Pianos About Town Project, but we really want to try something new and feel we are ready. We are eager to challenge ourselves, share our artistic talents and have a completed project that we can be proud of and share with our community! Because we are a team of young artists, we feel that we will be very approachable, especially for other kids, and we hope that we can be inspirational for other young artists. We are very excited to present our idea for the Pianos About Town Project.” The piano, titled “Rainforest Serenade,” celebrates the group’s shared love of nature and vibrant colors.
