There’s my mentor. For those of you who went to HSPVA or are active in the music community in Houston, you will appreciate this. Today I celebrated the newly retired Pat Bonner at breakfast at a cafe across from Lincoln Center. She was visiting 3 of her former students all on Broadway in different shows. We were set to meet up at 8:30am. She informed me by text that she was 20 minutes early. I walked in &, as expected, she was looking fabulous & bubbling with excitement. Of course, it’s because she had just seen her students on the Great White Way! She then informed me that breakfast wasn’t her thing & that she normally eats dry cheerios on the way to school & has for years. She ordered an apple turnover & a lemonade & the fun began: We sat for 2 1/2 hours & she told me story after story about her students: with each one, she would say their full name, PVA art area (yes, she keeps up with ALL art areas), their graduation year (all the way back to the early 70’s) & what they were up to, all with a pride that filled the room. For me, Pat Bonner was among the handful of mentors, along with the very special school HSPVA that changed my life. And today, her presence was a testament that the key to life is to pursue your passion to the end. She’s timeless y𠆚ll! And as I put her in a taxi, she announced that she hoped the plane was on time. She had region choir auditions to judge in Fort Bend County at the crack of dawn! #mentors #kinderhspva #teachersmakeadifference #youngatarts #singforhope @hspvafriends @kinderhspva @kinder_hspva_vocal.
