Performing the middle to the end of Chopin Étude Op. 10 No. 4 at Hudson Yards on December 23rd, 2020. Productive practice session today - I think I’m set up well to record at least one other piece next week for Instagram. I think this weekend I’ll focus almost exclusively on writing fingering and other details for totally new pieces rather than worry about maintenance. Sometimes this works better since I’ll be teaching a ton as usual. Performing Chopin Étude Op. 10 No. 4 at Hudson Yards on December 23rd, 2020. Doing more mental practice throughout the day these days. I used to do more during a run at the beginning of the day, but since I’m doing something different for exercise first thing in the morning now, I break up my physical practice with more mental practice than I used to. It’s good to get in the habit of very accurate mental practice with completely new pieces. Performing Chopin Étude Op. 10 No. 8 at Hudson Yards on December 23rd, 2020. Felt good to get in a serious practice day today! I was starting to get a little OCD in part of my practice again and thankfully was able to finally move on in a healthy manner. I was also thinking today about what other pieces I𠆝 like to get to in January... I spent today mainly doing focused learning and memorizing work on some 𠇊lready planned” pieces, but I need to start at least rapidly writing fingering through more pieces within the next few days. Performing Chopin Étude Op. 10 No. 12 “Revolutionary” at Hudson Yards on December 23rd, 2020. Productive practice day overall. I currently have 2 pieces that are on their way to being ready to record next week. I have played either entire pages or pairs of pages from memory and I should be able to link both of the pieces together in a time-efficient manner after some more spaced repetition. Trying to make strides in other Scarlatti sonatas and a few other choice pieces. My intention is to use what I learned from memorizing the complete Chopin Études - take advantage of memory consolidation during sleep by simultaneously learning many different pieces. Performing Chopin Étude Op. 25 No. 2 at Hudson Yards on December 23rd, 2020. More life / top-level piano strategic planning as well as cleaning and organizing today. Maybe it doesn’t sound terribly interesting, but it’s exciting to me :) I find that I am constantly directly using what I’m learning from my top-level pianistic goal planning in my 𠇎ntire life planning” and vice versa. As in: “Is this absolutely necessary?” “How can I make this more efficient?” “How can I find more joy while doing this?” “Should I do this every day or should I cycle it over several days?” “Should I make this a specific routine?” “Should I interleave this with other tasks?” The solving of these puzzles is both extremely challenging and exceptionally rewarding. After all, I’m continuously trying to further optimize both my pianistic and non-pianistic goals to make the best possible use of my time and energy and achieve the maximum possible happiness and freedom during this lifetime. Performing Chopin Étude Op. 10 No. 9 at Hudson Yards on December 23rd, 2020 (with competing Christmas music). Finally got both of my pianos tuned and serviced today! First time since the pandemic started. Definitely feel good about having both instruments in top condition again. But between that and doing tons of cleaning, unfortunately not as much practice as I had originally hoped! Still, I made some progress and interestingly re-fingered some passages in the later pages of the Scarlatti I uploaded yesterday. Performing Chopin Étude Op. 25 No. 7 at Hudson Yards on December 23rd, 2020. Maybe it sounds crazy, but I’ve been trying to make the endless list of random errands and tasks everyone has to do into something fun and enjoyable. Definitely was procrastinating on some things for too long, so recently I’ve been trying associate checking items off my to-do list with a really positive feeling of personal growth. As in: I’m the sort of person that gets things done and nothing will stand in the way of my musical and personal goals. Performing Chopin Étude Op. 25 No. 11 “Winter Wind” at Hudson Yards on December 23rd, 2020. Got some more business-related tasks done and I’ve been exercising every day this week - I feel like it’s made a positive difference in my mood and energy level, as expected. I spent quite a few hours today listening to many different Scarlatti sonatas and adding more of them to my possible “to learn” list. I think that on a large scale, I𠆝 like to write fingering through at least a good amount of them to better set myself up strategically for the future. Performing Chopin Étude Op. 10 No. 6 at Hudson Yards on December 23rd, 2020. Had a busier day today with some work-related tasks even though I’m technically still on vacation for a while. Didn’t get to practice as much, so I’m looking forward to getting a more serious day in tomorrow. I did write the complete fingering for the Scarlatti sonata in the previous clip and managed to get a few other tasks done as well. Trying to determine the best large-scale strategy as I dive into tons of new repertoire. Had a wonderful time at @hudsonyards yesterday. My amazing wife recorded me performing through 11 Chopin Études at two of the different @singforhope pianos that were there. I honestly never imagined I would perform at a public piano during a pandemic, but as we’re seeing neither friends nor family members this break, we felt very safe with the masks, social distancing, security, and hand sanitizer stations that were there. In this video, I’m playing Chopin Étude Op. 10 No. 5, the 𠇋lack Key Étude”. The full program was Chopin Études Op. 10 Nos. 1, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, & 12 and Op. 25 Nos. 2, 7, 11, and 12. It was meant to be casual and we had a really fun time both playing the pianos and exploring Hudson Yards! This is part of my challenge to myself to finish learning and memorizing the complete Chopin Études (all 27) in six months (July through December of 2020). I started from having performed 5 before and had 7 more in various stages of technical solidity.
