Today we are kicking off our Sing for Hope Pianos: PiaNola Grand Gala @hotelpeterandpaul l (March 20th) featuring live music by Tuba Skinny, “the Posse” & others. Artist Meet & Greet, @bacchanalwine bartending our event. Today I finally got to meet my piano for the @pianolapianos + @singforhope project and begin first layers of painting ont it! In the first clip, one of our project runners, @thetravelingpianist is explaining that the particular piano that I get to paint was rescued from a 300 year old house whose roof was blown off during Ida. The owners decided to donate it to @pianolapianos and we are super grateful to them for that! The piano itself is a Baldwin Spinnet from 1960 and she has a beautiful modern and boxy design which I’m in love with. I honestly can’t believe how much I was able to get done in our four hour session today. I was able to lay down the first layers of paint for the base painting and was able to set myself up to begin starting on some of the design and larger details tomorrow. I was honestly in bliss the whole time. It’s such a dream to get to paint an entire piano and I couldn’t be more thankful to have been chosen to work on this project. Can’t wait to share more progress with you all! Photo by @jmarquephoto . Home of @lujumama and @jballardglass . . A lot of you may not know that I was a full-time photojournalist for a newspaper for 16 years. During that time, one of the things I loved most was getting to visit the homes and studios of artists for stories. I loved seeing all the things they collect and the way they display objects in their personal space. As far as I’m concerned, artists have the coolest homes; they just do. So I’ve decided to start working on a personal project, going back to what inspired me to start shooting spaces to begin with by shooting the homes of artists, starting with my friends @lujumama and @jballardglass. Sarah Smith is a mixed-media artist. Her works are mostly collages made of paper, acrylic paint and ink. Her subjects are mostly women and girls sourced from photos she takes or vintage illustrations or picture books. Her husband Jeremy Ballard is a glass-blower. His handmade objects are displayed throughout their home and incorporated into their space as door handles and a rainbow of colors hanging from vintage light fixtures. Being in their home is an experience shaped by the unique surroundings. One of the things I love most about it is seeing all the amazing vintage finds they’ve collected over time. Seen here is a piano that belonged to Sarah’s grandmother. It was in rough shape when she inherited it, so she brought it back to life with @benjaminmoore’s Century paint color Morganite. And that piano bench; she found it in the trash! The sculpture on top of the piano is from Goodwill and the painting to the right is one of Sarah’s original works. This is just a small slice of the beauty that is their home, but I wanted to share it with you.
