My husband jokingly says that normally people have thoughts, but I have notes instead.....🤣🤣 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Seriously, I was thinking about all the performers and the enormous challenges last year brought. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Speaking from my heart, music isn’t just my profession. It’s more than that. Being a performing pianist is the way of life. I live concert to concert. It’s always either getting ready to perform or learning a new program for future recital. Rehearsing, performing, repeat..... ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Not to play for live audience was a huge loss. It’s devastating for all artists not to share their craft with people. Of course, many artists including myself, came up with other ways to bring music to listeners. Streaming or recording became some options which helped us not to loose touch with the audience. Hopefully, from the audience’s perspective it was also enjoyable. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I just can’t wait for all performers to play in the concert halls filled with people. Who would disagree that it is very healthy and necessary to have fun in life??? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ But I am talking about practicing piano. To learn a program or a piece, perfect, get ready for a performance takes a lot of work. Practicing in general is WORK! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ But I always remind my kids that having fun at the piano is also important! What can you do to have fun? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ For some it could be improvising. I personally don't have the talent for that, so its not an option... ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Another option to have fun is to sight read a different style of music. For example, if you love Broadway Musical - read that or pop songs or jazz standards. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Another option is to play etudes. Yes, I know that etudes have a reputation of being boring, but that's NOT TRUE! Some Moshkovsky's etudes are beautiful. And of course, there is always Chopin! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Or go to the old pieces that you mastered in the past and play that. Is this our future to see piano students on the screen? How effective is this? Or is it effective at all? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It was a journey for me. When the lockdown happened, I understood that we, teachers, have to adopt as fast as possible. We are responsible to keep students engaged, interested and moving forward. Also, keeping the structure is crucial for students lives. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I will be honest, at first I didn't think that teaching online will be very very successful. How can I correct the hand position or even see the fingering on both hands, I thought to myself. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ But I knew that its up to me to make it interesting and entertaining. So I tried, and tried and tried again. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ After a month or two I started to notice that student's sight reading improved, their focus and dedication became even stronger. While I can't judge nuances sometimes and might miss fingering, lessons are still very important and students really look forward to them. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Here is my statement about teaching online. Behind every successful person/business there is always a team of people that inspire, help and support. My school wouldn’t be what it is without my teachers. Today I want to tell you about one of them. I know Vassily Primakov practically from childhood ( his childhood for sure :-)) We went to the same school in Moscow studying under the same legendary professor Vera Gornostaeva. Often we travelled in Russia and Europe playing concerts and master classes. Sharing these experiences created a very special bond between us. We play 2 pianos/four hands, we run a concert series and I am also very fortunate because Vassily also teaches for my school. He is an endless source of inspiration to me. The most rewarding part of being a teacher is building long-lasting relationships with my students. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ These two sisters together with their mom became my family. The older girl, Emily, came to me at the ripe age of four. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It was very easy working with her and still is to this day. She has a fantastic ear, great mind and a lot of discipline. All the qualites one needs to become a serious musician. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Her younger sister started a bit later, when she was 6. I can say exactly the same about working with Rebecca. She has the same work ethics as Emily, very analytical and curious mind and a strong intuition for music. I wanted to share with you a story that took place very recently.\n⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀\nLately I have been reflecting upon my life, my work and my purpose. \n⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀\nI had a meeting with a new family yesterday. I have done trial lessons hundreds of times. The 2 sisters met me at the door. They couldn't have been nicer. A bit shy, but extremely polite young girls.\n⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀\nI spent some time with them, giving them some idea of what our lessons will be like.\n⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀\nUpon my departure ( which they tried to prevent ) these two kids were jumping of joy, chattering non-stop and sharing with their mother that \.

I can't imagine my life without music. At all! Not even for a day! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ That doesn't mean that I practice or teach every day. Sometimes rest is important. Growing up I used to hear this expression in Russian all the time. I never understood the true meaning of it. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Until I became a piano teacher. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It is very tempting to quickly go through all the initial stages teaching basics, like the notes, their values, counting, hand position etc.... ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Quickly go to the point when the student can actually play something. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ But, slower you go, faster you will get there... I learned over the years that you can not rush through. There are so many skills that are being formed at those initial beginning stages. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I start teaching reading the notes RIGHT AWAY, at the first lesson! No 5 finger positions with written finger numbers instead of memorizing notes. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The skill of looking up at the music and down at the keyboard is also very important and can not be overlooked. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The tone production, the concept of controlling the volume of the sound are other skills that need to be explained and worked on. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Slower you go, faster you will get there!
