. @singforhope Piano: You Are A Work of Art Artist: Sarah Nisbett @drawnontheway Piano Location: Marcus Garvey Park. Photos by: @pianist_without_borders ABOUT THE ARTIST A former opera singer, Sarah Nisbett is a self-taught live sketch artist and illustrator. Sarah learned how to draw by sketching her fellow passengers during her commute on the NYC subways. This led her to create Drawn On the Way, a collection of daily sketches drawn live, in the moment, which celebrate the people, moments and objects often overlooked in the rush of our day-to-day lives Through these intimate and often incomplete portraits of strangers Sarah hopes her work inspires people to see the world through a lens of appreciation and acceptance, leading them to view themselves and those around them as living works of art. After years of drawing strangers underground, aboveground and on the way, she hopes her art can help others learn what it has taught her: You are a work of art, and you’re sitting next to a masterpiece. ARTIST STATEMENT You Are A Work of Art. This phrase is not just the title of my piano, it is a powerful message and one that is deeply needed in a moment where the world is polarized, where messages of hate and unacceptance abound. I hope that when people see a piano covered in the faces of people who were anonymous strangers — but are now translated into art – they will begin to think of themselves and others in a different light. Maybe they will see themselves as worthy of becoming a work of art — maybe the will simply stop to look around them with more interest, or compassion. The piano, in this case, becomes a reason to stop and pay attention —as well as an immediate mode of connection with others — a way to break the pattern of moving anonymously and disconnectedly through the world. As they meditate on what it means to be worthy of being seen, they can enjoy making an artistic connection by making music with others, for others, or simply for themselves. #singforhope #artforall #people #ny #pianistwithoutborders #music #love #onelove #art #musician #musicians #artist #artists #piano #drawnontheway #SarahNisbett #piano969 #MarcusGarveyPark.

It was pure joy teaching drawing to both strangers and friends yesterday at my @singforhope piano in Marcus Garvey Park. There were so many special moments yesterday that it's hard to share just one, but here's a quick little story: After class a woman I'd taught walked over to give me back her notebook. I told her that it was hers to keep. She smiled and seemed excited. I told her that I hoped she'd keep drawing in it. She said she was staying in a halfway house and she gets lonely in her room at night, because there's not much to do and she's by herself. But, she said there were a lot of things she could draw in her room and she thought that it would make her happy to draw at night in her room. I hope she does find the same good company of art that I hoped to share with everyone in my class - and which I've certainly enjoyed during the hardest and darkest of times. It's my mission to show that art is accessible to us and that we are worthy of both the gift of making it and of becoming it. A huge thank you to @blick_harlem for donating notebooks and pencils and totes and making this totally free drawing class possible. Thank you always to @singforhope for making a program that brings communities together around the greatest sources of joy-- art and music. And thank you to everyone who came ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ (final drawing made by @vahlre).

🔈Start Spreading the news… My @singforhope will be located in Marcus Garvey Park from now until June 23! I can’t really describe the thrill I’ve been feeling as I see strangers sit down to play the piano I made. Seeing people playing in front of those big words, “YOU ARE A WORK OF ART,” brings that message to life in such a wonderful way. What total joy to see how those words resonate with every chord and curious stranger who stops by for a moment to bring a little more art into this city..
