A lot of clients ask how to incorporate family heirlooms and hand-me-downs in their designs, and the answer can be tricky. 😳 . My philosophy around this really mirrors @mariekondo, in that if it doesn’t #sparkjoy for you, you should let it go. Too many times I’ve seen clients work an entire space around a piece of furniture they were given that they don’t even like, and the result is always disappointing!🤦♀️ . There’s nothing wrong with using something as a temporary alternative, but I truly believe that unless you love the elements making up your space, you’ll never truly love the whole room. . So what do you do if you were given something (or lots of things) you don’t feel right parting with? Again, I defer to asking yourself if each item is really making you happy, and if not, then asking if the loved one who gave them to you would want you to be unhappy. 🤷♀️ . If you have one or two pieces that fit and function for you, there is an alternative which our client @mamapnts from our #CarlsbadCaliforniaCasual project nailed. In these instances I recommend re-purposing or refinishing the piece to make it feel like yours. You can always reupholster, sand and stain, or as in this instance, paint a piece to give it new life! 🤗 . Do you have gifted furniture? Do you like it? Comment below! 👇.
