53 pianos available:

An old brown Steinway, maybe 6'. Somewhat out of tune. In the lobby. Free to play, apparently. There are wipes: clean it when finished. It's not technically a public area so they may boot you if you're not there for a reason. It's in a lobby that's often staffed, so it would not be polite to practice scales there. I've never seen anyone but myself play it.

Gorgeous Young and Chang baby grand in A+ condition in the window. You’ll be invited to play if you want. Great coffee too and ice cream. Really beautiful cafe, bright, immaculately clean. Lots of people around (which made me nervous) working, relaxing, and chatting. It’s the perfect environment for your impromptu performance. Can’t wait to give it another shot.

There were two uprights with several broken keys and out of tune. The piano was still playable, although it kind of hurts to play it. I last saw it a month and a half ago.

As of this writing, house is open to the public 1-4pm Tuesdays and Wednesdays (but check the City of Mountain View website). I asked the volunteer if I could play on the upright and it's 100% fine.

https://raleighdenimworkshop.com/ Older console/spinet in the jeans shop. Atmosphere is great! Usually quiet middle of the day, busier late afternoon….give the shoppers a little concert. Very friendly staff who enjoy having a pianist visit. Buy some cool jeans while you’re there.

Great little coffee shop with pianos and a guitar to jive a bit while you’re waiting for your drink and sandwich.

The piano is right at the entrance! The building is an open lounge area shared by several small businesses including a cafe and barber shop.

The second of the two pianos located in the Kerr Drummond Mezzanine, this is a Steinway Model S Baby Grande piano. This piano, serial number 127586, was built in 1907 and as of 2022 is 115 years old. This piano was once played by Sir Elton John on November 1, 1973. This piano is horribly out of tune, earning itself the nickname "The Devil Piano".

Played on this piano 3 times and it recently seems to have had a tune up. They have it out only during the day, but sometimes it's not there during the day. It's orange and has flowers painted on it. The middle keys are pretty bad and it's hard to do legato, and overall it sounds like a toy piano, very sharp, but it's really nice and can be appreciated. There's no bench now, but they have it on a rolling stand and the elbows line up pretty well with the keys for people of average height. There's a lot of traffic in the area, so people may come up to you to watch or ask you questions. I'd also be cautious about dangerous strangers in the area, but they do have security guards patrolling the area. The security guards are occasionally gone, however, so I wouldn't focus too much on playing, more on surroundings.

It is a grand piano found in the entrance to the Neuroscience building. Parking in the attached garage is free for the first 30 minutes. The piano was donated by a neurologist that works in the building.

Go in the Main entrance and up the stairs or take the elevator to the second floor, to the balcony overlooking the first floor lobby. There is a grand piano kept there.

Not public but have been encouraged by the manager many times to play on slow nights and have never been stopped from playing here

Piano is from the 19th century and sounds good, but unfortunately it's kept outside and looks to be rapidly deteriorating. Some keys are stuck or have broken off. Still cool! I hope it's preserved

Grand piano front and center in the lobby. Locked and the front desk said they don’t have the key on hand. Told me they only allow pre-booked pianists to play but mentioned that they may be looking for someone to fill this role. I was not a guest of the hotel, had no previous rapport with the reception desk and my net worth was obviously far too low for them to make any policy exceptions.

Cool cafe with musically inclined clientele and staff. Live music almost every night, and you'll often find someone jamming at any other time. You definitely need to smooth talk your way into getting to play this piano: time of day and staff mood are key factors. If you succeed, you'll have a very appreciative live audience.

Inside the dining area, there's an upright piano that's rarely used. It might be nice to swing by here to play it and entertain the people living there. Dinner is served daily at 6pm. Ask (Ray) if you can play it (and also volunteer to help serve dinner!). The staff there is very friendly.

Great baby grand in the lobby. Key bed is unlocked but a sign warns you not to play it. Desk clerk would not allow. Said it's too old and out of tune. (looked serviceable to me) They said they also don't book professionals to play it. Just keeping it around for looks. The audacity to place a piano so prominently and then impose such structure... I know someone has played this piano. I probably wasn't dressed nicely enough. Good luck with this one

Grand piano parked right behind Bugsy Siegel's old car in the lobby. Despite it's old school charm and a beautiful grand piano in the entryway, the El Cortez was not very accommodating to my musical musings. Despite renting a premium room on the top floor and rendering Frank Sinatra's "All of me" with as much mafioso charm as I could muster, the bar man still called security. Security man started putting on rubber gloves and calling backup before approaching me to interrupt my jazzy ballad. Reception desk clerks were at least feeling it. Difficulty: extra hard.

Very classy local organic restaurant. Nice upright piano near the door. You'll be playing to patrons, so it better be good. Bar patrons are into it, staff is a little skeptical...

Beautiful Steinway Grand on the 62nd floor observation deck. Panoramic views of the entire Bay Area. Technically you're supposed to book time on this piano through a special internal tool, but I got away with a solid 30 minute set ;) Coffee shop and very corporate techie crowd. You'll need to know someone with a badge to get into this room.

Beautiful red grand piano in the second floor lobby just up the stairs. Friendly desk and great vibes. Hotel is supposedly closed until Feb 2019 for construction.

Oakland Secret is a very cool little music venue. There's a nice upright piano in the venue space just as you come in the door. Not open every day. Evening shows are put on by the folks who live here.

Cool art gallery in Oakland. Shows in the evening sometimes. Not always open. Small upright in the back of the studio.

An upright piano located in a West Plaza home. The owners are open to the public playing the piano, provided you send a sample of yourself playing (phone recordings accepted) and schedule an appointment. Call or text Robert at (816) 878-3540

Piano in the lobby is usually locked but there is another one floating around the hotel, usually back in the hallway near the ballroom.

Two beautiful grand pianos here. Stop by, have a cup of coffee and a waffle, learn a bit about Scandinavia and check out the grand piano upstairs! Second piano in the chapel downstairs.

Nice piano here at the Ivy Room in Albany. Usually house music playing. If you play well enough to entertain the bar you might try asking the bartender to turn off the music for a bit.

French breakfast brunch spot. Old timey sounding piano here. Not a public piano and not exactly welcome for random playing. Ask permission and you may be invited to play in the evening.

There is one up in Shoreline at the long thin park by the Little Ceasar's (sorry, don't know the name of the park). It's usually only out in summer and they put a tent over it so you don't have to play in direct sunlight.
